Kaya School opens Kindergarten class for 12 local children with help from Ölüdeniz Rotary Club and FIG

The village school in Kayaköy now has a lively ‘Ana sinif’ or kindergarten class of twelve children, which means that the newly refurbished building now has the chance of a future as a thriving school.

The Ölüdeniz Rotary Club’s president Mustafa Culban and Susan Tekin, the Chair of Fethiye International group, were amongst a group of visitors to the school on 29th September to see the new kindergarten class enjoying the school’s new facilities and equipment under the enthusiastic guidance of their teacher, Zeyneb Ceylan.

Mustafa Culban said that “The freshly painted room, with its new flooring, double glazed windows and new tables and chairs and toys has transformed the dusty and neglected old building into a dynamic learning centre for the youngsters to receive their first taste of formal teaching.”

Funding for this project came from the Ölüdeniz Rotary Club and FIG (Fethiye International Group). The 2,000TL FIG donated was raised from an ‘Afternoon with Louis de Bernières, when he visited the village in May.

Jill Erdoğan, a member of FIG, pointed out the equipment that the money bought for the school. “We at FIG are very happy that the school has benefited from our fund raising. The schoolroom now has a new floor, new tables and chairs and some seating for parents and children. It really is a wonderful educational environment for the children.”

The other rooms in the newly painted and restored building will be used for classrooms as and when the school role rises and they also offer the possibility of an adult education centre, according to Culban.

“The 12 children on the school role will move into the first class next September (2012), which means that the school now has a future,” said Mustafa Culban. “For a while we thought that the school was not going to get the chance to reopen but with the input from The Rotary Club and FIG the children of Kaya Village now have a secured local education for the future.
