Special Needs

We have some very sad news about little Mehmet Arda from Kaya, whom we helped to get to see a specialist in Izmir and who underwent, albeit belated, treatment for a congenital skull deformity.  Aged just 5 years he died very suddenly at home on Friday 3rd June.  It transpired he had had a brain haemorrhage and there was nothing any one could have done.  His mother, who remains devastated, says ‘he has gone to join his father in heaven’ our thoughts are with Nevin to whom fate has delivered a cruel blow making this her second severe bereavement in such a relatively young life.

We have now undertaken to help a family with a baby who was born with a severe cleft lip and palate.  They have to travel weekly to Antalya and whilst the bus company has now agreed to transport them for free they still need some funds for various medical items as their green card status does not cover all expenses.

SAD NEWS ABOUT OUR BOY WHO HAD LEUKEAMIA

Very sadly we have to report that Mehmet, our little ‘Rainbow boy’, passed away at his home on Tuesday 21st September after losing his very long battle against leukaemia.  Our thoughts are very much with the entire family and we will be visiting to pass on our condolences and sincere wishes that the remaining family of four will now be able to slowly but surely rebuild their lives and begin the road of recovery from all the trauma that this illness has brought to them. And we are humbly grateful that we were able to provide some practical support to this family during the especially difficult last year of Mehmet’s life.

Over the last year FIG has spent a lot of time helping a family with a young child suffering from Leukaemia.  Having contracted the disease at the age of 3 this little Mehmet, having undergone 3 years of chemotherapy had unfortunately suffered a relapse.  His family were in severe financial trouble because they had frequently had to travel to and stay in Antalya for his treatment and the father had often been unable to work.  Over several months we gave them financial support and together with the Çaliş carnival and Embrace Groups a great deal of food was provıded for theır cupboards and toys for the chıldren.  Sadly the father was unable to accept our offer of providing a boat trip, exclusively for the family and a few friends, before Mehmet’s deteriorating health made such an excursion impossible.

On a brighter note, baby K, who lost his mother within hours of his birth in March of this year, is thriving well.  His daddy now has a full time, year round job and his maternal grandmother, who came from Eskişehir to look after him, now receives an allowance from the state for his keep.  It is good to hear that with support from their friends and some extra help via our charity and its supporters this family are now independently able to carry on with their lives.

Our little Mehmet, Mehmet A has been fortunate in having a sponsor who paid for the cost of taking him to Izmir and seeing a specialist.  They also paid for further investigations thereby bypassing a lengthy waiting list and this allowed the doctors to determine that as Mehmet A had not had the surgery he needed when aged 6 months, they needed to operate now in order to ensure that his eyesight was not compromised.  Mehmet A has a condition whereby the bones of part of his skull - paaraticularly those behind his face area - were fused at birth meaning that his skull could not grow properly.

On Tuesday 8th Dec 2009 he underwent a successful operation.  Subsequently it proved to have saved his sight, so the he no longer kept bumping into things!
